BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES

When developing our behavior guidelines, IXL Learning Center comes from the understanding that children learn from their experiences.  A natural process for this is experiencing cause and effect. Our purpose as educators is to facilitate this developmental phase, with love and positivity. At IXL, children who are under 2 ½ benefit from teacher led interactions that promote comfort, kindness and safety.  If undesirable behaviors occur, a teacher will use redirection to guide and distract the child to a more desirable action. Children 2½ and older also learn from those important teacher interactions, in addition to utilizing our IXL Social Emotional Curriculum. This program supports a child’s social emotional health and improves their capacity for self control, self confidence, trust, communication, and empathy. Teachers use a variety of techniques based on the individual child, the setting and the specific situation. These techniques are as follows:

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

The child will be encouraged, praised, or rewarded when he/she is demonstrating desirable or beyond desirable behavior.

"IF... THEN" STATEMENTS

A statement in which the child is encouraged to make a positive choice. Sample: "If you pick up the blocks, then you can go to the computer area."

"WHEN... THEN" STATEMENTS

A statement in which the child is encouraged to accomplish something before going on to something else. Sample: "When you finish picking up the blocks, then you may go outside."

"POWER PAUSE" OR TAKING A BREAK

The child is separated from the group for a child regulated period of time. This is an IXL created area where children can go when they are upset, need to calm down, or have a problem to solve; similar to a “safe spot” or “cozy corner.”  The purpose of this area is for the child to have a place to “take a PAUSE,” be alone if needed, feel safe, or to calm their minds and bodies.  This area is comprised of many important tools including: comfortable sitting area, timers, Power Cards, Emotions Poster, emotion mirrors, and Power Pieces (fidget boxes).

REDIRECTION

The child is redirected to another activity and is given an opportunity to try again at another time.

POWER CARDS

Power Cards are visual problem solving solutions. These are located throughout the classroom in a variety sizes for children and teachers to access. There are 13 Power Cards in all and vary based on age appropriate solutions.
